Teaching Problem Solving

Problem solving is a fundamental means of developing mathematical knowledge at any level. For this reason, it is one of the most important, if not the most important, aspect of doing mathematics. It is very important for us to share an understanding of what is meant by "problem solving." In this workshop we will examine the elements of (mathematical) problem solving process and some examples of student work involving solving problems.

Outcomes:

• Understand the reasons why (mathematical) problem solving is difficult for students.
• Explore the complex nature of (mathematical) problem solving.
• Discuss the fundamental principles about teaching problem solving.
• Examine a systematically planned problem solving program.
• Practise some Math Circles problem solving activities.
