About Us

NS Math Circles is a mathematics outreach program based out of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Dalhousie University. It began about a decade ago when two graduate students organized evening math events for local high school students. A graduate student or faculty member would give a 2 hour hands-on math presentation and a pizza supper would be provided for the students.

Late in February 2009, the Imperial Oil Foundation decided to fund NS Math Circles with $100,000 each year for four years, so that we could expand our outreach by developing curriculum related workshops to take into high schools across Nova Scotia, free of charge.

In June of 2014 Eastlink began a partnership with NS Math Circles. They are donated $500,000 to the program over a 5 year period. This allowed us to expand our outreach into junior high and elementary schools. An article about this event can be found HERE. This partnership has been very exciting for us!

In the spring of 2019, Eastlink renewed its $500,000 donation for a further five years! This will allow us to continue our outreach, improve our program, and widen our scope.

In March of 2020, we had to suspend our in-person activities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We adapted to these new circumstances, however, holding our first Online Monthly Event in June of 2020. We also began offering a selection of our presentations virtually, and completed a total of 70 online class visits between December 2020 and June of 2021.

As of fall of 2021, we are carefully moving our activities back to our usual in-person format, while following Dalhousie and public health guidelines. We are happy to continue to offer presentations in a virtual format, especially for schools that are not within the HRM.

Many Thanks to our Partners!
